Through the International Internship Programme the Language Institute received two Japanese nationals to teach Japanese to undergraduates, one in 1995/1996 and another in 1996/1997, but no longer receives any.

The Language Institute holds a wide variety of teaching materials for Japanese, including books, cassettes and CD-ROMs, totaling well over 200 items. It also subscribes to one Japan-related journal in Japanese. The main University library holds approximately 2,500 titles involving Japan and just under 700 of these were published after 1980.
