This website is an update of the Japanese Studies Survey conducted in April 2007, (which is archived online here
) providing an overview of Japanese Studies at the University level in the UK. These surveys build upon the work of the Japanese Degree Courses Survey conducted in 2001/2002 by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation and The Japan Foundation.
Changes are continually taking place within the field of Japanese Studies here in the UK with some institutions expanding whilst others contract. This survey includes not only Japanese language studies, but also multi-disciplinary research in the Japanese Studies field. Where possible, this survey tries to capture what Japanese Studies research is currently being conducted by both staff and students. This year°«s update has also taken the opportunity to directly hear the opinions of Japanese Studies students for the first time.
It is hoped that this website will be a useful reference resource for those in the Japanese Studies community in providing an awareness of other research and courses at universities throughout the UK. It is also hoped that it helps bring attention to Japanese Studies and its continuing value in the UK, and that it exposes the diversity and breadth of research and teaching taking place.
